It is no secret that the bucktail jig is the single most utilized striper lure in the Northeast, and I can't think of a single time in over twenty years that I haven't carried them with me into the surf. While every angler grows to prefer certain weight/profile/color jigs depending on the waters they fish, there is one thing all anglers agree on- bucktails with weak hooks are the absolute worst. At Sir Defied we have bent our fair share of jig hooks, and still year over year we continue to hook some of our biggest fish on bucktail jigs! In the Northeast, striped bass in the 40lb class are quick to make even decently strong hooks turn to limp noodles. In our “pursuit of perfection” finding a bucktail jig we could put our stamp on was soaring to the top of the list, and I ultimately decided to source the ingredients for both a “value-conscious” and a “zero-compromises” configuration, creating the Pro and Elite series of bucktail jigs. While there are certainly differences, they share a baseline criteria that all sizes/shapes/styles will utilize hooks strong enough to handle the biggest inshore species you can reach from the shoreline.

With the Elite Series, it took significantly longer to objectively score every hardware combination to find the best of the best, and while some high performing configurations were also quite expensive, I was happy to find the highest overall score went to a jig with fairly average cost compared to the others in the top ten for performance. This was largely in part to the folks at Mustad understanding the demands and delivering on their end. I can't begin to explain how proud I am to offer the Elite Series bucktails after so much time was spent in the development- in every way they are a level up from any bucktail you have ever seen. Poured in custom aluminum molds, the jigs start with a Mustad hook that not only feels strong enough to handle anything that swims, but also bears the sharpest hook point of any hook we tested to maximize that ever-important penetrating power. The jigs then move away from the traditional hook eye, and instead use an over-sized eyelet ring, to allow easier use with clips and allowing more freedom of movement. The jigs are then Cerakote™ powder coated and oven cured, receiving several layers of clear vinyl paint over the jig head after the eyes are applied/painted on. Tied with natural bucktail, with trailer options including long synthetic hairs, feathers, tarpaulin tails, and more- even all of the above if you opt for the Sir Defied (patent-pending) system that allows an angler to easily swap jig trailers on the fly. If you have a hunch that your next fish may the fish of a lifetime, you can have all the added confidence knowing there is no better bucktail jig available anywhere in the world. Period.
